The Youth of Africa: Taking Our Future Into Our Own Hands

There is a common phrase often heard: “Leave it to fate.” While external circumstances play a role in shaping our lives, we must ask ourselves an important question: What is our role in shaping our own future?

If our destinies as Africans were entirely beyond our control, does that mean we have no part to play? Are we, as the youth of Africa, supposed to stand idly by, surrendering our future to forces beyond our control? The answer is simple: No! Our future is in our hands!

Seeds do not plant themselves. They do not water themselves or tend to their own growth. It is the hands of people that sow, nurture, and bring them to maturity. Now, replace those seeds with the destiny of Africa. What happens when we leave it to the wind? Nothing grows. And in the future, there will be no fruits to harvest.

The same applies to Africa’s progress. If we, the youth, do not step up to take responsibility for our continent’s future, we risk watching it wither before us. We must be intentional about shaping a tomorrow that we can be proud of.

Africa’s future will not build itself. It requires our hands—to work, to create, and to innovate. It requires our mouths—to speak out against injustice, corruption, and inefficiency. And it requires our minds—to think critically, solve problems, and lead with vision.

We cannot afford to remain silent when we witness wrongdoing. We must challenge the status quo, push for reforms, and demand better leadership. We must work diligently to find creative and innovative ways to solve Africa’s unique challenges—whether in governance, education, technology, or entrepreneurship.

Perhaps, being the most youthful continent in the world is a reminder that we have the power to shape our destinies.

Let this be a wake-up call. The future is not something that happens to us; it is something we shape with our decisions and actions today. So, African youth, rise up! Work hard. Speak up. Innovate. Do not leave your destiny to the wind—take charge and create the Africa you want to see.
